Wyong (/ˈwaɪɒŋ/) is a town on the Central Coast of New South Wales, Australia. It is located approximately 63 km SSW of Newcastle and 93 km NNE of the state capital Sydney. Established in 1888, it is one of two administrative centers for the Central Coast Council.

Wyong is slightly more than a one-hour drive from Sydney. It is a great starting point for exploring Tuggerah Lake and the lovely Yarramalong Valley. Ourimbah in the south and from the Pacific Ocean to the hills beyond the Yarramalong Valley.

The Area:

Lake Munmorah, Budgewoi, and Tuggerah Lakes dominate the area.

Popular beaches are Bateau Bay, Toowoon Bay, Blue Bay, The Entrance, The Entrance North, Soldiers Beach at Norah Head, The Lakes, and Budgewoi beaches.

Australia’s rugged national parkland and recreation areas create a beautiful backdrop for rural areas.

The Darkinjung people were the first inhabitants of the area, and ‘wyong’ is thought to possibly be a term for a ‘place of running water’, or possibly a reference to an edible yam found locally. This Coast area thrives with nearby rivers, lakes, and ocean. It’s clear because of the healthy waterways.

Population

According to the 2016 census of Population, there were 4,326 people in Wyong.

• Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people made up 6.3% of the population.

• 73.9% of people were born in Australia. The next most common country of birth was England at 3.6%.

• 82.3% of people spoke only English at home.

• The most common responses for religion were No Religion 27.2%, Anglican 22.3% and Catholic 22.3%.[1]

Facilities

Wyong has a compact town center. It includes Central Coast Councils Chambers and Village Central Wyong Shopping Centre. Additionally, there’s Hunter and Central Coast Institute of TAFE Wyong Campus. Moreover, you’ll find Wyong Police Station and Wyong Local Court House. The town center also features The Art House Wyong Performing Arts and Conference Centre, as well as banks, government offices, local businesses, and community services. Wyong Public School is located on Cutler Drive, north of the town centre. Wyong High School is west of the town centre on Alison Road.

Wyong is the hub of transport services in the northern part of the Central Coast region. Wyong railway station is served by NSW TrainLink services. Bus services are operated by Busways, Coastal Liner and Red Bus Services. The Pacific Highway passed through the town until bypassed in December 1983.[5]

Wyong Racecourse is an important provincial track with weekly meetings. The town has extensive sport and leisure facilities.

Wyong Hospital is not located in the town, rather it is located 8.6 km North-East in Hamlyn Terrace.
